Keeping a neat home...for you and your pets.

We all love our pets.  But they do make it harder to keep our homes clean.  Here's some tips that I hope will help.

1. Give your pet frequent bathes and make sure his nails are clipped.

A clean pet makes it easier to keep a clean house.  Plus...those nails tear up things when not clipped.  They can scratch up very expensive things...like your hardwood floors.

Just "Chillin"

2. Purchase furniture that is easy to clean and hard to destroy.

Leather furniture wipes clean easily, but can be scratched.   (Have I mentioned how important it is to make sure nails are clipped?)  Really, any type of furniture can be ruined, but some are just lots easier to destroy.  Think about your pet when your buying new items for the home.  A white fabric chair might not be easy to keep looking nice with a Newfie in the home.  I'm wondering if all metal furniture is going to become ultra-chic?

3. Keep doors shut in extra rooms when you are gone.

Pets need plenty of room to enjoy their day, but they don't have to have access to every room in the house.  I would suggest closing off bedrooms and bathrooms.  This way you don't have to vacuum every room in the house so often.

4.  Clean up "accidents" quickly...and thoroughly!

Accidents on the carpet are the worst.
Blot the stain with a dry cloth.  Keep blotting without rubbing.  It will probably take several cloths to get up all the liquid.
Spray a pet cleaner with odor remover on the area. After it dries, vacuum.

Sprinkle baking soda on the area and let sit for a few hours.  Vacuum.

5. Vacuum regularly to keep the animal hair under control.

I would also dust mop the bare floors at least every other day.   Wood floors are easy to keep clean, but do scratch easily.   (Have I mentioned how important it is to make sure nails are clipped?)  Tile floors don't scratch but some of the more porous material is harder to keep odor free.
6.  Make sure your pet has plenty of toys to chew on or play with during the day.

Dogs like to chew.  Cats like to scratch.  If you don't provide them with something to do these activities on....they will find something of yours to use.  Trust me...I'm 100% sure about this one!

One last cute puppy picture

I have 2 dogs that I love.  They make life so much more enjoyable and I can't imagine them not being part of my family's life.  But they do require some extra work if you want to keep your house looking....and smelling....great.

(Now where did I put those doggy nail clippers???)
