The Yampatikas Utes were the first to inhabit the Steamboat Springs area. They hunted in the valley during the summer.
In the 19th century, trappers moved in. The name of Steamboat Springs supposedly originated when French trappers thought they heard the chugging sound of a steamboat’s steam engine. Since the sound came from a natural mineral hot spring, the town began to be called Steamboat Springs.
The founder of Steamboat Springs was James Harvey Crawford. He moved to Steamboat in 1874, but his family did not get there until two years later. They were the only residents in the town for five years. But by 1885, there were five other families living in the area. A sawmill was established in 1883, which helped the area grow.
In 1900, Steamboat Springs officially became a town and James Crawford became its first mayor. Nine years later, the railroad arrived. Since cattle ranching was such a thriving business in Steamboat Springs, the depot became one of the largest cattle shipping depots in the West. And the railroad also brought people from all over to see the scenic Steamboat Springs.
By the 1960's Steamboat Springs had become a resort ski destination. What had once been the only method of transportation in the winters, became a popular winter pastime.
